Wild horse

Horse Banner Pictures, Images and Photos

Truly wild

This wild horse was given its name by a Russian explorer Przewalskii who discovered the Mongolian ponies on the edge of the Gobi Desert.

The breed are also called the Asiatic horse and the Mongolian horse.

The Asiatic looks typically like a strain of primitive horse, such as the paintings found in the caves in Spain and France.

These paintings by early humans looked like the breed we call Prewalski’s horse.

The height varies from 12hh to 14.2hh (122cm – 147cm) with the typical colour being sand dun, with black points and mane and tail.

The mane is short and grows upright with little or no forelock.

An eel stripe is prominent (a black line running down the back).

The head is large and plain which is usually straight or convex.

The eyes are set high making the head look larger.

The muzzle and around the eyes are pale in colour.

The shoulders are upright and body is straight with no withers.

This breed is a protected species and is preserved in zoos and private studs.

It is truly wild and no attempts at domestication have been made.

In their wild state, these horses live in social groups consisting of one dominant stallion, a dominant lead mare, other mares, and their offspring (a herd).

The patterns of their daily lives exhibit horse behavior similar to that of feral horse herds.

Each group has a well-defined home range; within the range, the herd will travel between three and six miles a day, spending most of the time grazing, drinking, using salt licks and dozing.

At night, the herd will stay close and sleep for about four hours.

Herds sometimes overlap without conflict, as the stallions are more protective of their mares than their territory.
