Begin with the help of an assistant.
The trainer will lead the horse to the narrow ditch.
Let the horse have a look at it, then walk over the ditch and ask the horse to follow.
If the horse does not respond get the assistant to use a lunging whip gently across his hocks, whilst encouraging the using her voice.
The trainer at the front end must be ready, as at some point the horse will leap into the air over the ditch.
If you are alert the horse will let you know when he is about to jump.

When the horse reaches the other side, let him know you are pleased with him. Using your voice and giving him a gentle pat.
As the horse gains confidence he can be lunged on a circle and then over the ditch.
If all goes well, mount the horse and jump over the ditch.
Water training
If you have successfully jumped the ditch and you feel the horse is confident enough, fill the ditch with water and follow the same training program as before.

When introducing the horse to a new fence always make it small, simple and inviting.
Introduce jumping poles gradually over the ditch.
If you have a difficult horse that is terrified and won’t go anywhere near the ditch or water and you have tried for over a week and the horse reacts the same as he did the first day; then this horse may not be the horse to compete on.
You will need to be able to rely on the horse and feel confident the horse will take you over.
There are plenty of other show jumping classes to enter.
