Little pony pictures

A pony is a small horse.

Depending on context, a pony may be a horse that is under an approximate or exact height at the withers, or a small horse with a specific conformation and temperament.

Compared to other horses, ponies often exhibit thicker manes, tails and overall coat, as well as proportionally shorter legs, wider barrels, heavier bone, thicker necks, and shorter heads with broader foreheads.

The word "pony" derives from the old French poulenet, meaning foal, a young, immature horse, but this is not the modern meaning; unlike a horse foal, a pony remains small when fully grown.

In competitions the official definition of a pony is that it must not measure more than 148cm without shoes.

Anything higher is classed as a horse.

Ponies share a common ancestry with horses, but are different from them in several ways.

There are many breeds of small ponies, which can sometimes be confused with a foal to an inexperienced person who is unfamiliar with horses.

Most ponies are generally friendly, curious and intelligent.

Ponies are very smart and pick up bad habits quickly.

An experienced lightweight rider should train a pony to prevent bad habits occurring and to teach it good manners.

Colour Types

A colour type is defined by colour rather than conformation so it is not a breed, although there are Registration Associations for it.
