Polo horses
The game of Polo was discovered in Persia about 2,500 years ago.
Modern polo games began in Silchar; the capital of the Cacher district and the Silchar Polo club was founded in 1859.
Polo ponies
were originally no bigger than 12.2hh (1,27m).
In 1876 the height limit in India was raised to 13.2hh (1.37m) max and in England raised to 14.2hh (1.47m).
In 1916 the height ruling was increased again to 15 –15.3hh (1.52 – 1.60m).
The modern pony is therefor a small horse – but is always called a pony.
For competition, polo ponies have their manes roached or other wise known as hogged (cut off) and tails braided up so that there is no danger of being tangled in the mallet.
They require considerable training and ongoing conditioning, and because each rider requires several horses in a single match, this can be an expensive hobby or past time.
The most common type is the Argentinean pony that dominates the game.

Polo horse
These ponies are crossed between Thoroughbreds and native Criollo.
They are exceptionally strong limbed with hardy feet and capable of galloping on very hard ground.
They have a variety of colours with any colour being acceptable.
