Problems lunging horses
My horse keeps turning into me! Walk forward towards him waving your whip, pointing towards his head saying ‘away’.
He should be persuaded to step back then you can drive the horse forward onto the circle.
How do I change the rein? Ask the horse to Holt on the track; remember to point your whip down and behind you.
You need to train the horse to stand still for you to approach. He may decide to step into the circle.
To keep the animal out you need to shake the lunge line up and down like a snake shape.
This will put a ripple in the line heading toward the horses nose.
Don’t forget to use your voice and give the command ‘stand’ in a firm manner.
If you allow the horse to walk towards you it will continue to do this every time.
When the
horse is standing still, praise him for this good behaviour, and then change the lunge line over so the loop of the cava son is facing right.
Turn the horse around to face the right, keeping him on the circle.
Hold the lunge line in your right hand and whip in your left pointing downwards and behind you.
Take up your position stepping back towards the horses quarters and using your voice command ‘walk on’, pointing your whip up at his shoulder.
