lunge training over a jump
Before lunge training over a jump, the horse must be longeingwell on the flat and fully aware of horse training voice commands
training a horse to jump
Always attach the lunge line to the cava son, never to the bit. Do not attach side reins or reins to the stirrups or leathers.
The horse needs to be free over the fence and be able to use it’s head, shoulders and round its back, in order to bascule. Bascule is the correct jumping shape needed.
training jumping horses
For a young horse, lunge horses is an ideal way to introduce to training jumping. The horse is able to jump naturally without the interference of a rider.
There is an awful lot of information about horses that we need to know. Even with an older horse, if it has never jumped before, then it is still at the green horse training stage, and must be treated as a novice.

Training a horse to jump on the lunge
For lunge training over a jump it is easier if you have an assistant to help with the fence, but it is still possible to manage on your own.
Manage the lunge training effectively, working on both reins spending a maximum of 10 mins on each rein, keeping the horse interested and always ending on a good note.
Lunge the horse in an enclosed area, if possible. A lunge pit would be the ideal area. If you do not have these facilities then a flat field, alongside part of a hedge would be fine.
Set the jump blocks up near the fence, with a pole sloping, each side off the block. The poles will act as wings, to keep the horse in. If you don’t have jump blocks then use milk crates or forty-gallon drums on their side.
If you do use drums, make them secure so they do not roll.
Remember, whatever jump stand you use, it must not interfere with the lunge line.
Green horse training begins with longeing the horse through the jump blocks without a pole.
Lunge at walk first, then progress to a pole on the floor; again work in walk first, followed by trot, remembering to work on both reins.
Progress to a cross pole, working in trot in both directions. If the horse breaks into canter that’s fine.
Building a cross pole will encourage the horse to jump in the middle of the fence, as that is the lowest part of the jump.
Next lunge horses over a straight bar. For green horse training keep the fence low, no higher than 2ft 3.
It is better to keep the fence low and change the appearance of it Changing the colour of the poles, placing cones, milk crates, blanket, water tray underneath, will all help to keep the horse interested and prevent boredom.
My horse run’s out when it approaches the fence?
Extend the wings, making it difficult for the horse to run out next time.
Do not build the fence too high. The horse should be able to jump the fence from a stand still, with encouragement from the handler on the ground if it stops.
Your intensions must always be to get the horse over the fence the first time, so the fence needs to be low.
If things go wrong then change the fence to a small cross pole, keep longeing the horse over the fence until it is happy, then finish on a good note. Begin again the next day or every other day, thus giving the horse variety.
