The Lipizzaner horses were developed in the Lipica stud in Slovenia where it takes its name and is still bred there.
It is descended from the ancient Spanish breed and was made up of nine Spanish stallions and twenty-four mares that were imported to develop a grand breed of horse.

The high school movements they perform take many years to perfect for both horse and rider.

The height ranges from 15.1 – 16.2hh (1.55 – 1.68m) and the coat colour is usually grey but sometimes bay.
Foals are born black, and their coats gradually get lighter as they grow older.

They are slow to mature and they may be around seven years before they turn grey.
However, they live and are active longer than many other breeds, with horses performing the difficult exercises of the Spanish Riding School well into their 20s and living into their 30s.

Lipizzans have a long head, with a straight or slightly convex profile.
The jaw is deep, the ears small, eyes large and expressive and the nostrils flared.
They have a neck that is sturdy, yet arched and withers that are low, muscular and broad.
This beautiful breed of horse boasts a silky mane and tail, which is carried high and well set.
The breed is stocky built with short, very strong well-muscled legs, well built shoulders making it suitable for riding and harness work.
The feet tend to be small, but are tough.
Lipizzans have starred or played supporting roles in many movies, TV shows and books.
