· Horse not straight on approach to fence
· Horse is taken by surprise
· The horse may have had a bad experience with a previous rider and relates this as unpleasant.
· Pain
Is the horse out of his comfort zone?
Keep the horse at a height that he is confident at jumping.
If you continue to push the horse, you will create an unhappy horse that will eventually turn sour and refuse every time.
Your horse may be having an off day.
He could be feeling under the weather. If you think it is out of character, then give him the benefit of the doubt.
If the horse has been competing at a certain height with a previous rider and has begun stopping with you, you will need to take a closer look at how you are riding it.
Have you changed anything? Like tack or the way the horse is ridden.
Horses are individuals like people.
You cannot change the horse to suit your style of riding.
You need to adapt to the horse in order to get the best out of him.
Horses are well known to take advantage if allowed.

The classic is the horse that has been consistently achieving double clears.
The rider gets complacent, drops his guard and the horse ducks out.
Some horses pull out from a fence if they are not straight on approach or see the fence at the last minute.
You need to train at home before you attempt fences at angles in a show.
If the horse has suddenly started refusing and generally does not want to compete anymore, you need to ask yourself a few questions.
Could the horse be in pain?
Does the horse have a back problem? Or any other kind of problem that needs a vet’s attention.
Always keep good contact on approach to a fence, keeping the horse straight on approach and in the middle of the fence.
Ride with a positive attitude and don’t let a run out turn into a habit!.
The last thing you need is the horse perfecting the technique of ‘cocking’ his jaw and pulling you out at every opportunity.
