Jump training!

Why does my horse balloon over a fence ?

Jump higher

From time to time you will see horses jump higher over the fence than required.

This is down to inexperience or fright.

The young inexperienced horse might be unsure about the jump and will leap high into the air and put another two foot on the fence.

Through correct training the horse will learn to judge the height of the fence and be more economical over the fence.

Horses that balloon over a jump, waists too much time in the air, loosing valuable seconds against the clock.

The horse also waists energy and it is not comfortable for the rider to complete a course in this manner.

Having said that it is far better for a horse to jump like this than not jump big enough to clear the fence.

If you have just introduced the horse to jumping and you feel as if you are going into orbit over the fence; it is a good feeling if the horse is brave and just extra cautious.

On the other hand if the horse is not a bold type, in which case he will lack confidence and jump in a hesitant and dubious way over familiar fences.

The horse will frighten himself each time he jumps.

Training a horse of this type should be done slowly.

The horse needs time to build up his confidence.

This type of horse will take a lot longer to train than a bold confident animal.
