A very basic advert could mean your horse being overlooked, or you will also have to answer the same questions when people phone up time and time again.

When someone comes to view the horse, make sure it is well presented.

It should be clean and tidy looking in order to catch the potential buyers eye as soon as they see it.

Make sure you have the passport at hand when the buyer arrives for inspection.

Not being able to present a passport when required will usually put most buyers off, as this sets alarm bells ringing.

From a seller’s point of view, it is not advisable to allow the horse to go out on trail, as anything could go wrong or an accident could happen.

You could allow someone to make several visits to see the horse or take the horse to an unfamiliar place in order for the purchaser to try the horse out in knew surrounding.

Make it clear to the buyers how much time you will give them before they must make up their mind, or you could end up loosing a sale with another interested party.

Should you decide to allow a trial period, the intended buyer should insure the horse before the animal is taken of the yard.

As a seller it is always wise to indicate if you believe the horse is not suitable for the intended rider.

It is the job of a vet to declare a horse sound. You may state that you believe it to be sound.

If you are struggling to sell your horse privately, you have several options depending on your circumstances.

Many livery yards will take horses in and prepare them for sale and sell on your behalf for an agreed fee.

Most horse dealers will part exchange your horse for another. Most usually require cash as well.


A horse auction is a good option for a quick sale.

At an auction expect to receive a lot less than you would ask for in a private sale.
