Lunging is a technique used for training horses.
Knowing how to lunge a horse or pony correctly is important, inorder to gain a responsive horse.
The horse is asked to work at the end of a line and respond to voice commands from the handler on the ground that holds the line.
What horse or pony will benefit from being lunged ?
· It settles a fresh horse before riding.
· It accustoms the horse to move in a balanced rhythmatical manner in walk, trot and canter.
How do i lunge a horse?
With the cavasson noseband on the horse, attach the lunge line to the centre ring.
Gather up the lunge line in the left hand into large loops, about 16 ins in diameter.
Make sure the swivel loop on the cavasson is turned towards you.
Begin parallel to the rails with your whip pointing behind you, holding it low.
I always lunge to the left first, as most horses prefer going this way.
Stand towards the horse’s quarters asking it to walk on in a positive manner.
Always put yourself in a position where you feel you are driving the horse forward, not leading it.

How do I encourage the horse forwards?
Stand level or towards the horse's quarters, pointing the whip towards his shoulder.
This is known as the driving position.
How do I slow the horse down or stop the horse?
Stand nearer the horse’s head while lowering your whip and using your voice commands in the appropriate tone of voice.
