This glossary will explain some of the horse and pony terms and meanings,for the equestrian world as you might not understand all the words you hear and read about.
A
Above the bit
When a horse evades the bit by raising his head higher to avoid pressure from the rider’s hand.
Action
The way a horse or pony moves at various gaits.
A.I
Artificial insemination, the mechanical introduction of semen into the genital tract of the mare (female horse or pony).
Azoturia
Cramping of a horse's large muscles, also known as "tying up".
Artificial gaits
Taught rather than natural gaits. Including the running walk, slow gait, rack and, in some instances, the pace.
All are modifications of the walk.

Aids
Signals that a rider uses to tell a horse what to do. Natural aids are voice, rider’s hands, seat and legs. Artificial aids are whips and spurs.
Amble
The sloe form of the lateral pacing gait.
American barn
This is a large barn that is divided into several large boxes (stables)on either side of a central isle.
Approach
This is the last few strides a horse or pony takes before a jump.
Amateur
A horse rider over eighteen years of age, who does not get paid for riding or competing.
A professional rider gets paid to ride athorse shows.
Astride
When a rider sits on a horse with one leg on either side of the horse.
