N

Neck strap

This is a strap that passes around the horse's neck.

It can be used as part of a martingale or breastplate.

It can also be used for a novice rider to hold on to if they loose their balance, rather than balancing with the reins that lead to the horse,s mouth.

Nosband

This is part of a bridle that fits around the horse's or pony's nose.

Near side

The left side of a horse or pony.

This is the side you get on.



Novice horse

An inexperienced horse.




Numnah

A pad used under a saddle to prevent it from rubbing and to absorb the horse’s sweat.

O

Off side

The right hand side of the horse.


On the bit

A horse’s head is held in a position, giving the rider maximum control.


Outline

The shape a horse’s body makes when he is being ridden.


Over face a horse

To ask a horse to do something that is beyond his capabilities. For example- to jump a fence that is too high for him, beyond his ability.



Oriental horses

This is a term used to describe horses of eastern origin like the Arab or the Barb horse.

Out-crossing

Introducing outside blood to the breed by mating unrelated breeds.

This is sometimes done to improve a breed.
