Horse meanings and terms in the horse world

B

Backing

Getting on a horse for the very first time, that has just been broken. This is not a job for the novice rider.

Bale

An amount of hay.Hay bales, come in small and large sizes. A small bale is easy to lift.

The bale in the picture is straw.

Barrel

The body between the forearms and the loins of the horse.

Blue feet

Dense blue-black colouring of the horn.


Balance

A horse is said to be balanced, when its weight is distributed in such a way that he can move correctly.

For a novice rider, it would be difficult to understand if the horse was balanced .

However, if you tried to canter a circle on an unbalanced horse, it would be difficult to achieve, while a balanced horse would be able to canter a very small circle.


Bit

The bit goes in the horse’s mouth and is part of the horse’s bridle, unless you are using a bit less bridle.

The bit in the picture is a loose ring snaffle.

Breed

A horse whose pedigree is registered in a studbook.


Blaze

A wide white marking running down the front of a horse’s face.

There are many different markings, that can be found on a horse's face.

Bombproof

A horse that is not afraid of anything.

He will not spook.That said; never forget that even the safest of horses can get spooked.

Brood mare

A mare (female horse) used for breeding only.

Bone

Bone measurement determines a horse's ability to carry weight.

The more bone, the more weight a horse can carry.

Measurement is taken around the leg just below the knee or hock.



Bucking

This is when a horse, kicks out with his back legs, whilst his head is down, low to the floor.

A horse will buck for several reasons. If you are a novice rider, it's not easy to sit to this.

Like everything with horses, there is a technique used to sit to a buck.

Body protector

A piece of safety equipment for the rider to wear.

A rigid waistcoat helps to protect you if you fall off.

In some equestrian events, body protectors are compulsory. A body protector is a wise buy for a novice rider.

Body brush

A short soft bristled brush, used for removing dirt and grease from a horse or pony's coat.

There are many horse brushes, each having a different name.

Breeching

This is a piece of harness driving equipment that is used to help the horse slow down the cart.

A breeching strap is usually a piece of strong leather that rests behind the horse. When going downhill, the horse will lean against it, to slow the cart down.

Breed society

This organisation, regulates the breeding of its particular breed, of horse or pony.

There are many different breeds of horse and pony in the world, so we have many breed societies.
