Horse dictionary for people new to horses

If you are new to horses, there’s a lot to learn. I have tried to list as many horsey words as I can, to make up this horse dictionary.


The horse world has a language of its own.

This list explains, what some of these words mean.


L

Leg up

A helper, holds the rider’s left leg and helps him or her, to spring up into the saddle.

Livery

Keeping a horse or pony on someone else’s premises, and paying them to look after it for you. This can be part or full livery.

Full livery is when the horse is looked after and exercised, seven days a week. Part livery, could include, feeding and turn out every day.

Loading

Walking a horse into a trailer or horsebox.


 

Long reining

Driving a horse while on foot.

A Two reins attached to either side of the bit.

The reins are very long, so the trainer can hold a rein in each hand and walk behind him, directing the horse from the ground.


Loins

This is the area on either side of the backbone of the horse, just behind the saddle.

Laminitis

This is painful inflammation of a horse's feet. An overweight pony is a high risk for laminitis.Laminitis is common in ponies, however horses can get it too.

Lateral

A lateral pace, is when both of the horse's legs on the same side, move together. (At the side).

Lunging

The horse is worked from the ground on a circle in walk, trot and canter. A lunging rein is a very long lead, to enable the horse to work on the circle. Lunging usually takes place in a lunging pen, which is a circular enclosure.

Liverpool bit

This is a horse bit. It is a driving bit, which has three different rein positions for greater control.

This driving bit is commonly seen on small jumping ponies, to enable the very young riders to control the highly strung pony.


Lock on

When a horse jumps a fence and there is another in front of him as he lands, but not the fence you want him to jump.


M

Ménage

An enclosed arena, used for riding.Usually the surface is a sand based.

Mare

A female horse or pony from 4 years or more.

Mustang

A breed of horse descended from Spanish horses.

Morgan

An American breed of horse,that is between 1.45 – 1.55m (14.2 – 15.2hh).

Mule

The mule is a hybrid.

The offspring of a female horse (mare)and a male donkey (Jack).

Muzzle

The area around the horse’s mouth.Some horses have pink muzzles.

Mitbah

This term is used to describe the angle at which the neck, of an Arab horse enters the head.

Martingale

A piece of horse tack that is designed to prevent a horse from throwing its head up too high when riding.

There are different types of martingales. The running, standing or Irish martingale.

The picture shows a running martingale.
