The Hessian horse is a German Warm blood from the state of Hessen.
Although less well known than other German Warm bloods it is an elegant sport horse of great beauty, and I would agree.
Sport horse, or Sporthorse, is a term used to describe a type of horse, rather than any particular breed.
The term generally refers to horses bred for the traditional Olympic equestrian sporting events of dressage, eventing, show jumping, and combined driving.
The precise definition varies.
In the United States, horses used in hunt seat and show hunter competition, are often classed as sport horses, whereas the British show hunter is classified as a show horse.
Horses used for western riding disciplines, Saddle seat, or any form of horse racing are generally not described as sport horses.
Warmbloods are a group of middleweight horse types and breeds, primarily originating in Europe, registered with organizations that are characterized by open studbook policy, studbook selection, and the aim of breeding for equestrian sport.
The traditional breed had mostly Oldenburger bloodlines, gracing a characteristic convex head profile.
They were bred for light draft work in agricultural work before the advent of mechanisation.
The state stud at Dillenberg ,was established in 1869 and breeding continues to take place alongside private stallion owners.
Around the middle of the 20th century, the breed was refined.
Hanoverian, Trakehner, West Phalian, English Thoroughbred and Anglo-Arab blood were introduced; to produce a very eye catching, elegant, athletic looking sport and hack horse of today.
These breeds were used to refine the breed around 1960.
The height ranges from 16 – 17hh (1.60 – 1.70m) with all solid colours being acceptable.
It is an elegant strong, smart horse with a good temperament, which makes it ideally suited as a riding horse or sports horses at competitions.
