Brushing horses

Grooming horses is the term used for brushing or cleaning


Why do you need to clean a horse?

Horsemen agree that to brush a horse is an important part of horse care, and proper cleaning is essential for horses that are used in competition.

Most recommend brushing a horse daily, although this is not always possible.

However, regular brushing helps to ensure the horse is healthy and comfortable.

At a minimum, horses are generally cleaned before being worked, and the same process again after a workout as well.


It gives us the opportunity to check the horse or pony over to maintain his health and well-being.

It allows us to develop a relationship with the horse.

It might help with muscle tone.

When you brush the horse, it cleans and improves the overall appearance.

It improves blood flow to the skin.



A stabled horse should be brushed on a daily basis.

Exceptions to the rule are sick stabled horses, which require minimal brushing.

A sick horse with an infectious disease should not be brushed, as there is a risk of spreading the infection further.

Ringworm is a good example.


Grass kept horse or pony

The grass kept pony or horse that is not in work does not require brushing.

These horses have natural oils in the coat to help keep them warm.

The mud needs to be removed and also the dust should be removed from his eyes and nostrils with a sponge and water.

His dock needs to be inspected and washed if necessary and the hooves need to be picked out.

The horse needs to keep the grease in his coat; these are natural oils to keep him warm.
