Friesland

The Fresian or  Friesland horse is one of Europe’s ancient cool blood breeds.

It is native to -Friesland in the Northern area of Netherlands where a heavy horse is known to have existed dating as far back as 1,000BC.

It has been used extensively to improve other breeds in the UK such as Dales and Fell ponies and also in the development of the Shire horse.

In the early 20th century, it had great influences on European breeds, improving and acting as a foundation stock.

Despite the breed’s popularity, in the 19th century it nearly became extinct due to being used as a driving horse for trotting races.

It became less suited to harness work and the bearing of heavier workloads.

A new breeding program began ,which introduced Oldenburg blood and revived the breed to its original characteristics.

The modern horse of today is an attractive breed, with the colour always being black.

Though extremely rare, and not accepted for registration in most cases, Friesians are occasionally chestnut.

The official breed rarely has white markings of any kind; most registries allow only a small star on the forehead for purebred registration.

These horses also have a long, thick mane and tail, often wavy, and "feathers" (long silky hair on the lower legs), deliberately left untrimmed.

Its height ranges from 15hh (1.52m) upwards.

The breed has powerful overall conformation and good bone structure, with what is sometimes called a "Baroque" body type.

They have long, arched necks and well chiselled, short-eared, "Spanish type" heads.

Their sloping shoulders are quite powerful.

They have compact, muscular bodies with strong sloping hindquarters and a low-set tail.

Their limbs are comparatively short and strong.

This breed is an energetic draft horse that also goes well under saddle, especially in dressage.

Due to their colouring, they are often used for funerals.
