The breed is of draught type but, as different demands have been made of it, different types have emerged.
There are now three set types of Fin horse, they are:
Draft Type
The draft is a workhorse and the oldest of the Fin horse types.
The draft also has its own separate breeding section since the studbook was first split in 1924.
The
Draught-type Fin horse is heavier and have a longer body than the horse of trotter and riding types.
A draught-type horse must pass two tests in the studbook evaluation: a walking test and either a pulling or a general drivability test.
The points given for the horse's performance in these tests are added to those given for its temperament and gaits, resulting in the final workhorse score.
The horse is also given a score for its conformation.
In addition to achieving the minimum scores for both workability and conformation, stallions accepted for the workhorse section of the stud book are required to trot 1,000 metres (1,100 yd) in less than 2 minutes and 30 seconds.
The Draft horses are used in the forest to pull heavy loads of lumber in difficult terrain and even in chest-deep snow.
They are agile for their size and used to working on rough terrain.
Trotter type Fin horse
The trotter
type is finer and faster than the draft type and the lightest of the three types .
A trotter section horse should be of light conformation yet muscular, with a relatively long body and long legs.
The trotter type has historically been used for harness racing, with organised harness races having been held since 1817.
Riding type Fin horse
The riding horse should be a sensible but active and reliable mount.
Its combination of size and good temperament makes it suitable for both adults and children.
To qualify for the riding section, a horse must carry itself well, and have a long neck, small head, sloping shoulder and well-defined withers.
The body must not be too long.
The three types are similar in conformation with even temperament, they just differ in height.
The general outlook is that of a compact body strongly muscled, with good bone, sturdy "dry" legs, and strong hooves.
The riding horse type is for recreational riding and used at riding schools, trekking, and riding therapy schools.
They are also competitive in many disciplines, and in the 1970s separate competition classes for Finnhorses were established at horse shows, which also helped to increase the popularity of the breed.
They are considered to be a reliable jumper and are used as a mount for cross-country riding, particularly over difficult terrain.
TheFin horse typically has a thick, long silky mane and tail, and the legs have light feathering.
The ideal Fin horse is easy-to-handle, versatile, and combines strength, agility, speed and endurance.
The Fin horse is lively, reliable and of alert temperament.
