Care of horses is the responsibility of the owner.

Equine grooming-why do we need to groom brush horse? Equine grooming gives us the opportunity to check the horse or pony over to maintain his health and well-being.

Equine grooming allows us to develop a relationship with the horse.

Equine grooming might help with muscle tone and care of horses.

When you groom brush the horse, it cleans and improves the overall appearance.

Equine grooming improves blood flow to the skin.


Equine grooming should take place on a daily basis for the stabled horse. Exceptions to the rule are sick stabled horses, which require minimal equine grooming.

A sick horse with an infectious disease should avoid equine grooming , as there is a risk of spreading the infection further. Ringworm is a good example.

The grass kept pony or horse that is not in work does not require equine grooming. These horses have natural oils in the coat to help keep them warm.

Care of horses- grass kept horse or pony If the horse lives out and is unrugged, it needs minimal equine grooming. The mud needs to be removed and also the dust should be removed from his eyes and nostrils,cleaning horse with sponge and water.

Inspect the dock ,washing horse dock if necessary and the hooves need to be picked out.

The horse needs to keep the grease in his coat; these are natural oils to keep him warm.Cleaning horse would release the oils from the coat.

Equine grooming-How do I groom brush a horse? Make sure the horse is dry. It is much easier to groom brush the mud off a dry horse.

Care of horses feet. Using a hoof pick remove mud and debris cleaning horse hoof. The hoof pick should be used from heel to toe to avoid damaging the heel. Washing horse hooves if muddy.

Use a rubber curry comb or dandy brush to loosen any dry mud or sweat off the horse.

Next groom brush using a body brush the main equine grooming tool to loosen and remove dust and grease from the body and neck of the horse.

Groom brush the horse in a circular motion anticlockwise on the right side and clockwise on the left, remembering to clean the brush every 3 to 4 strokes with a currycomb.

Clean the head with a body brush and sponge out the nostrils, mouth and eyes. Clean the mane and tail with a mane comb. If the horse has a fine mane and tail use a body brush or your fingers, as fine skinned horses will end up with a thin mane and tail.

Use a different sponge from the face when washing horse dock. If required and the horses hooves are dry apply hoof oil.

Care of horses-Grooming kit Mane comb a mane comb is useful on very tough manes and tails. On fine skinned horses it can tear the hair. The mane comb is also used when plaiting or pulling manes and tails.

Hoof pick to remove mud and stones from the hoof.

Dandy brush, is used to remove dried mud, sweat and surface dust. It is a stiff long bristled brush. This equine grooming brush should not be used on the head, mane or tail.

Body brush is the main equine grooming tool for cleaning horse. It is a soft bristled brush with short hair to remove dust and grease and dried sweat.

Currycomb -a rubber currycomb is used for removing dried mud and sweat, loose hair when the horse is moulting.

Currycomb -a metal currycomb is used to clean brushes. It should never be used for cleaning horse nor a plastic currycomb.

Water brush is used to lay the mane and tail. It has a medium soft texture and length of bristle.

Sweat scraper is used after washing horse to remove excess water.

Equine grooming brushes vary in price. The better the quality groom brush the longer they will last. All brushes should be washed regularly and placed to dry making sure the water drains away from their backs.

A horse that is ill (infected) should have it’s own set of equine brushes.

Washing horse-Sponges-Cleaning horse A large sponge is used for applying water to cool off the horse or remove stable stains. Two small sponges for cleaning the eyes, nose and mouth. Use the other sponge for cleaning the dock. It is easier to have two different coloured sponges for face and dock.

Cleaning horse sheath If there is a strong smell or nodules of greasy dirt collecting in and around the sheath it is time to clean it. Some horses accept the sheath being washed, with others you might need an assistant to hold up a front leg.

You will need rubber gloves a sponge and a bucket of mild soapy water. After cleaning you will need a towel to dry it and apply a lubricant such as baby oil to soften the skin. This is all part of the equine grooming and care of horses.

Washing horse If you have a grey horse it will need regular washing, as they are difficult to keep clean. Always choose a warm day for washing horse. There are many good shampoos on the market for grey horses or to remove stubborn stains. Use the shampoo sparingly with warm water.



Start with the head and dry it with a towel. Make sure your head collar is clean or you will end up with dirty marks remaining.

Wash the horse all over then rinse thoroughly. Not rinsing thoroughly can cause an allergic reaction in some horses.

Use a sweat scrapper to remove surplus water. Brush the mane and tail with a clean body brush.

The horse should then be walked around to dry off.
