Horse breeds

The Australian brumbies or wild bush horses are descendents of domesticated horses that escaped into the wild.

A Brumby is a free-roaming feral horse in Australia that roam in herds.

A herd is known as a “mob” or “band”.

Although found in many areas around the country, the best-known are found in the Australian Alps region in south-eastern Australia.

Today, most of them are found in the Northern Territory, with the second largest population in Queensland.

They are the descendants of escaped or lost horses, dating back in some cases to those belonging to the early European settlers, including the "Capers" from South Africa, Timor Ponies from Indonesia, British pony and draught horse breeds, and a significant number of Thoroughbreds and Arabians.

There is no height limit and any colour being acceptable.

They are all different shapes and sizes.

The breed is very tough and has the ability to survive in harsh conditions.

They can often be seen digging holes in the ground to find water around dry riverbeds.

Annual round ups take place using helicopters and jeeps.

Like all free roaming wild horses, inbreeding occurs which weakens the breed.

All horses with deformities are culled, which is an effective method of controlling the herd.

Some are culled for the meat market, which contributes millions of dollars to the Australian economy.

Today they can be found in many places including some national parks, and are part of the Countries heritage.

The Australian Brumby horses have a reputation for being difficult to brake for general riding or farm work, but those who are domesticated are used as working stock horses, trail horses, show horses, pony club and camp drafters.

Wild Brumbies are used in Brumby training camps by organisations that promote positive interaction between troubled, high-risk youths.

These camps usually last several weeks, allowing youths to train a wild Brumby to become a tame willing saddle horse while improving the youths’ self esteem.
