Stable vices are stereo types of equines, especially horses.

They usually develop as a result of being confined, particularly with insufficient exercise (i.e. in a stable).

Vices can develop out of boredom or hunger, excess energy, isolation.

They present a management issue, not only leading to facility damage from chewing, kicking, and repetitive motion, but also lead to health consequences for the animal if not addressed.

They also may raise animal welfare concerns.

What is a box walking?

This behaviour is known as a stable vice.

The horse will continuously walk around in a circle in the stable.

Circling: Like weaving, this is a repetitive movement, only the individual circles compulsively in its stall rather than just rocking back and forth.

This habit can also lead to weight loss and lameness.

Why does my horse behave like this?

Horses are social herd animals.

They enjoy social contact and interaction with other horses.

Separation such as stabling a horse for long periods of time causes stress and anxiety.

The horse becomes bored. It has nothing else to do and is unable to forage.

This behaviour is like a therapy, it passes away time and alleviates boredom.

Endorphins are released when the horse is displaying this behaviour, so the horse can become addicted to the feeling it produces.

What do I need to do?

· Are you providing a stimulating environment to satisfy the horses needs?

·How to relieve stress and avoid boredom for the stabled horse

If you have done everything – the horse has forage, freedom and friends but is continuing with this behaviour then permanent turnout would be the only answer.

Some horses cannot tolerate being stabled for long periods of time.
