Azteca horses are also known as the ” national Horse of Mexico” and is a fairly new breed.
The Mexican cowboys or Charros wanted to produce a horse that had speed, stamina and agility to work on the ranches.
Crossing the Andalucian with Quarter horses and with Criollo mares produced the breed.
The Azteca arrived graceful and versatile.
For registration, breed requirements state that the Azteca should have no more than three quarters Andalucian or Quarter Horse blood from the first generations.
The breed stands around 14.2 – 16hh .
All solid colours are acceptable along with Tobiano (a white base overlaid with large patches of solid colour) and Overo (irregular patches of white on a solid base colour).

The horses are used for ranch work and also very good at all sports which require agility, power, spirit, strength, and speed.
This includes charreria, classical riding, dressage, bull fighting, cutting, reining, team penning, polo, pleasure riding,trail riding and driving.
They have an elegant straight head profile of medium size that can sometimes be either convex or concave.
With small, well-pricked ears, and expressive eyes.
Muscular neck slightly arched with long sloping shoulders

Withers are medium to sharp, and the horse has a straight, fairly short back, and a broad, round croup.
It has a luxurious, long flowing mane and tail and the tail is set low.
The girth is deep and full, well-muscled cannon bones with good joints along with a varied knee action which can be long and flowing or elevated.
