A good horse exercise is to set up a simple grid with three trotting poles on approach and after completing the grid.
The trotting poles need to be placed off the corner, so you have two ways of approaching and two ways of exiting. By altering the direction the horse will not be able to anticipate. He should start to listen to your aids first.
Don’t expect it to be perfect straight away. It may take several attempts at the horse exercise before you get a result.
Another horse exercise is to set up a bounce-jumping grid for the showjumper with the option of three jumps after the grid about three strides away from the grid. Each time you go through the grid you will either jump ahead, slightly left or to the right.
The showjumper is unable to anticipate so begins to listen and concentrate more, waiting for the riders aids.
When practising or training jumping at home, set up a few jumps that include several changes of direction.
The horse needs to be kept focused, and the jumps need to be interesting to get the horses attention. For example, set the poles on an angle instead of dead straight. The next fence could be set the opposite way.
A narrow style or brightly coloured planks will encourage the horse to assess an obstacle rather than ploughing on at full speed.
Vary the course, jumping fences different ways and turning in different directions, so the horse does not anticipate his next fence. The horse must be continuously listening and waiting for the riders instructions.
Training jumping
Place trotting poles infront of the fence and progress to canter poles. This will help regulate the horse's pace on approach.
Circle on approach to the fence.Keep circling untill you feel the horse relaxing then jump the fence once.Continue with this method of circling and jumping the fence once, repeating a few times.
Another horse exercise used by some trainers is to canter towards the fence, then pull the horse up to walk.Continue walking towards the fence and halt in front of it.
Repeat the exercise a few times and when the horse is calm jump the fence.
Some stabled horses are like coiled springs and need time to settle down, before they can concentrate fully.
It is a good idea to lunge a fresh horse, to get rid of the pent up energy.
